Thinking about summer, sun, beaches, and of course the perfect bikini to wear during these days, I started wondering about the history of the world’s smallest bathing suit, the bikini, and here is what I found.
The bikini is one of the most common pieces currently used on the beaches around the world. This garment has been around for more than 60 years. The French engineer Louis Réard invented this two-piece swimsuit on the 5th July 1946. It was such an innovation and provocation for those times, that very often it was linked to the emancipation of women (or women’s independece). He called his creation “Bikini”, because of the name of an Atoll of the Pacific Ocean, where U.S. exploded the first atomic bomb. The bikini was as explosive as the atomic bomb itself, banned by many countries and condemned by religious leaders.
